Hanar (Alexandar Mourad) was Gul Desset's science officer during a mission to Radjic VI. Hanar worked very closely with Starfleet Lieutenant Corey Aster, and eventually their working relationship turned into something more intimate.

Hanar discovered a message from Ro Nevin's great-grandfather, Vedek Ro Denar, hidden in the shield generator left behind by the Cardassian terraforming team, revealing that the group of over a thousand Bajoran refugees that Vedek Ro had brought to Radjic VI were executed by the Cardassians to cover up the terraforming project. The Cardassians had used protomatter during their experiment, a substance known to be unstable and dangerous, and hence abandoned by most of the galaxy's major civilizations. Hanar didn't want to pass the message onto the authorities because it also revealed that Vedek Ro had betrayed the Bajoran resistance in order to get the refugees to Radjic VI, and Hanar believed that his people needed to take full responsibility for their actions.

Hanar was murdered by Glinn Betras while trying to prevent Betras from killing Ro and Aster. Betras was sent by Cardassian Central Command to insure that the protomatter experiments were kept a secret so that the Cardassians could continue them. Ultimately, Hanar was remembered for sacrificing his life for peace between Cardassia and Bajor.
