Rear Admiral Ian Quincy Knapp (David W. Dial) commands Deep Space 12 and the Starfleet task forces assigned there during the length of the Tholian War. During the Dominion War, he commanded the USS Devonshire in the Federation's first encounter with the Grey Confederacy. His twin brother, John Knapp, was killed by the Dominion. The death left Knapp scarred and deeply cynical. After the Grey's psionic attack, Knapp took time to recover and to mourn the loss of his brother and family. Since discovering he had a daughter, Traya, he worked hard to raise her aboard the space station.

Personal History

Knapp is a human, with a twin brother, John (now deceased). About 16 years ago, he had a relationship with a woman who became the mother of his daughter, Traya.

Starfleet Career

At Starfleet Academy

Quincy's classmates at the Academy included his twin brother, John, Jennifer Cole, Janice Willcocks, and John Lane. (HF102, "Enemy Unknown, Part 2")

Captain of the Devonshire

In 2375 during the final push of the Dominion War, Knapp, commanding the Devonshire, was ordered to chase two enemy ships into the McAllister C-5 Nebula. Taking two other ships with him, the USS Tiananmen and the USS Rutledge, he pursued the enemy vessels into the nebula, only to run headlong into the Grey Confederacy. After a brief but violent battle, the ship was sacrificed in an effort to prevent the Grey from ambushing the unsuspecting fleet located minutes away in clear space.

Captain of the Excelsior

Eighteen months after the Grey attack, in 2377, Knapp was given command of the USS Excelsior, a Galaxy III-class starship assigned to Deep Space 12. He also relieved his olf friend Jennifer Cole of command of DS12, assuming command of Briar Patch operations and the work on Ba'ku.

The Excelsior served as his flagship while he acted as commander of DS12, until Admiral Nechayev assumed command. Knapp continued to command Excelsior until Starfleet Command decided it would best serve relations with the Dominion to relieve of command. Earlier in the year, he had been implicated (and later proven innocent of any wrongdoing) in the death of a Dominion Ambassador. ("Worst Fears, Part 1," "Old Wound") His first officer, Elizabeth Shelby, took temporary command of Excelsior, which was made permanent after Knapp successfully thwarted a Grey attack on the station by himself. He was then promoted to Commodore and Commanding Officer of Deep Space 12 by Nechayev herself, although she retained her position of Sector Commander.

Although Knapp sometimes finds it difficult being away from the action, he took the assignment in order to spend more time with his daughter, Traya, and develop their relationship, since he realised a starship was not the best environment for that. ("Worst Fears, Part 3") But Nechayev relies on his experience as a commander many a time, and he has commanded various missions on the Saratoga and Antietam in defense of the station and the Briar Patch itself. His relationship with Nechayev changes with his mood, but the two generally work well together, even though he has rubbed several people the wrong way, most notabely President Vindenpawl of Vreijheid IV.

Admiral

Knapp was promoted to Admiral in 2382 during the Tholian War. He oversees the task forces assigned to Deep Space 12 during the length of that conflict and is in charge of planning for war operations in and near the Briar Patch. He also helped fortify the alliance between the major Alpha Quadrant powers who have forces located in the Briar Patch, to fight against Siroc's Tholian/Breen forces. Shortly after the kidnap of his daughter by Siroc, he left Starfleet to search for her, although the effort proved unsuccessful. He recruited Lieutenant Jenna McFarland to assist in his search, as well as Pelas, a Cardassian boy who inadvertantly helped in Traya's kidnap.

After returning to Deep Space 12, Pelas was arrested by Starfleet authorities. Knapp learned that his daughter had been rescued from Siroc's clutches by personnel from the U.S.S. Helena, under command of Captain Tolian Naros.("The Center Cannot Hold") As Deep Space 12 was evacuated during a Tholian attack, Knapp released Pelas and gave him a ship, as well as the Helena's coordinates at the Grey Dyson Sphere, to find Traya.

With persuasion from McFarland, Knapp took command of a Federation/Grey hybrid ship, built by Cmdr. Will Martinez at the New Grey Research Facility, and managed to destroy the Grey released from fold space, when they ran out of Tholians and turned on DS12. When Knapp and his crew lost control of the hybrid ship, the Admiral ejected the bridge module to save the lives of his crew as the ship itself folded out of the Ba'ku system. When the Briar Patch disappeared, following the destruction of the Grey and their Dyson Sphere, Knapp was finally reunited with his daughter. Six months later, Knapp attended the wedding of Lt. Cmdr. Ro Nevin and Lt. Cmdr. Corey Aster, and later sent the U.S.S. Excelsior to make contact with new races previously unknown in the Briar Patch. ("Its Hour Come Round At Last")

When the Archein invasion of the galaxy began, Romulan Proconsul Yeshva approached Knapp on DS12 for assistance in dealing with the threat. Knapp dispatched a slipstream-equipped probe to Andromeda to gather information on the Archeins' artificial wormhole. He later dispatched two ships to that distant galaxy to destroy the wormhole - the I.K.S. R'kag, and the U.S.S. Odyssey, under command of Captain T'Lek. The mission was successful, but the Odyssey did not return. ('Iliad')
