Captain Tolian Naros (Larry Laverne) was an El-Aurian who, in his 645 years, had witnessed historical conflicts among many cultures, especially in the Briar Patch.

Naros appeared to have singular insight into the nature of the Patch. Earlier in his life, a time he described as one he wasn't particularly proud of, he was a prominent figure in the Patch, making contact with Tren'La, and opening them up to trade with civilizations outside the Patch. He traveled the Patch's subspace currents freely, and bragged about his knowledge of them. He was not alone, though. His partner at the time, Siroc, has now become his bitter nemesis.

Personal History

Naros was born on El-Aura, a member of the long-lived race from that planet. El-Aura was destroyed by the Borg, scattering its few survivors throughout the galaxy. As a refugee, his travels eventually took him to the Briar Patch. It's not known how much time Naros spent in the Patch, but he apparently met an unknown species that shared knowledge of the subspace currents that allow travel through the Patch at warp speeds.

Naros left the Patch for reasons unknown, and spent time traveling through many parts of what is today Federation space, including a stint as a miner on Janus VI, where he became interested in joining Starfleet after observing first contact with the Horta ("Devil in the Dark," TOS).

Was considered by Keran Azhan to be his family's oldest friend, despite contact only twice in the last fifteen years. ("The Battle is Joined", HF)

Decades later, disheartened by the events of the Dominion War, Naros retired to a Federation agricultural colony on Norpin IV in 2375. Four years later, extraordinary circumstances surrounding the discovery by the USS Excelsior of the mysterious tetrahedrons compelled Naros to return to active duty as first officer of that starship.

Tren'La

Naros spent some time on Tren'La, deep inside the Briar Patch, serving as a kind of advisor to the Royal Family, and leading trade missions that exposed the Tren'La to the outside galaxy. The Tren'La had been in a state of conflict with the Grey Confederacy for some time. However, Naros would not share his knowledge of the currents with the Tren'La; he judged that they were not ready to use that knowledge at their stage of development at that time. Naros eventually left Tren'La, and the Royal Family turned to Siroc for help in securing technology to give them the upper hand in their war with the Grey.

Siroc

Naros met Siroc at least 200 years ago. Siroc, like Naros, is a member of a long-lived species, and was also a refugee. Naros took him under his wing and the two became partners. At some point, they had a falling out, and Naros left Siroc stranded in deep space.

Starfleet Career

Through the Dominion War

Naros served in Starfleet as an enlisted man. He received a field commission to Lieutenant Commander during the Dominion War, then a promotion to Commander just before his retirement.

Retirement and Reinstatement

While in retirement on Norpin IV, he apparently sensed the activation of tetrahedron keys in 2379 when they were retrieved by the USS Independence ("Heroes"), and successfully sought reinstatement of his Starfleet commission. Starfleet, aware of his long history with the Briar Patch, assigned him to gather intelligence about a tetrahedron discovered by the Cardassians and being studied by them at a secret facility within the Briar Patch.

Aboard the USS Excelsior

After his successful recovery of data about the Cardassian-held tetrahedron, Starfleet Command then ordered him to serve – without consulting Admiral Nechayev or Captain Elizabeth Shelby – as First Officer of the Excelsior after Shelby took command. ("Modus Operandi") Since that time he has won Shelby's respect, but continues to frustrate Nechayev. Even so, he and Shelby butted heads over his reluctance to share everything he knew about Siroc, the Briar Patch or the tetrahedrons.

Grey Research Facility

Naros also served in the effort to research the Grey and the tetrahedrons, convinced that they are linked to Siroc and the Tholians. He was under standing orders to turn over new information discovered by Excelsior‘s crew to Commander William Martinez of the Grey Research Facility, despite Shelby's resentment over his clandestine activities. ("Countermeasures")

Aboard the USS Helena

In 2382, Admiral Ian Quincy Knapp gave command of the USS Helena to Naros, issuing a field promotion to the rank of Captain, shortly after the ship's shakedown cruise. In his first mission as Captain, Naros used a Horta strike team, led by Lt. Pergium, as torpedoes to gain entry into and successfully disable a tetrahedron under the control of Siroc and Tholian forces. ("Her Battle Lanterns Lit")

End of the Road

Early 2383 Naros left the Helena in Theresa Faisal's hands and beamed down the the Grey Dyson Sphere in order to meet Siroc in what would turn out to be their final confrontation. Naros prevented Siroc from carrying out an act that could have potentially detroyed the entire known universe, but gave his own life in the process (Its Hour Come Round At Last).

Though any evidence of Naros's true fate was obliterated by the Omega nova that destroyed the Dyson Sphere, his official Starfleet status is Missing, Presumed Dead.
